Building and maintaining

Software Development

Design, write and maintain the systems people use — most of the job is reading and changing what exists.

Career overview

Software development is less about writing new code than about changing existing code safely. The skill that compounds is being able to read an unfamiliar system, understand why it was built that way, and alter it without breaking the parts you did not look at.

The field splits into front-end, back-end, mobile, platform and embedded work, among others. They share fundamentals but reward different interests — visual and interaction detail on one end, data flow and reliability on the other.

Typical responsibilities

What the work looks like

  • Reading existing code and tracing how a feature actually works
  • Breaking a requirement into changes that can ship independently
  • Writing code and the tests that keep it honest
  • Reviewing colleagues' changes and discussing trade-offs
  • Debugging a problem that only appears in production
  • Maintaining and upgrading dependencies, infrastructure and documentation

Relevant skills

Transferable entry points

Where people come into this from

Most people arrive from somewhere adjacent. These are common starting points and what tends to carry over.

  • IT support or systems work

Debugging method, Linux familiarity and a feel for how systems fail.

  • QA or testing

Specification reading, edge-case thinking and tooling experience.

  • Design or front-of-house digital roles

Interface judgement and empathy for the person using the thing.

  • A trade or engineering discipline

Systematic fault-finding and tolerance for careful, incremental work.

Suggested development areas

Where the gap usually is

Common areas people need to build when moving toward this path. Useful, not disqualifying.

  • 01Testing strategy — unit, integration, and knowing which to reach for
  • 02Reading large codebases quickly
  • 03Fundamentals: data structures, concurrency, how the network behaves
  • 04Writing design documents that survive review

Frequently asked

Questions people ask about this path

All three routes are represented in the field. What varies is structure and cost, not whether the route is viable. What consistently matters at hiring is working code someone else can read and your ability to talk through decisions you made.
