How it feels to use
Design and Digital Experience
Shape what people encounter — research, structure, interface, and the words inside it.
Career overview
Digital design spans research into what people need, the structure of information, the interface itself, and the writing within it. The craft is less about visual taste than about reducing the effort a person has to spend.
Specialisms differ meaningfully: product designers work close to engineering, researchers work close to users, content designers own the language. Most teams expect some overlap across all three.
Typical responsibilities
What the work looks like
- Watching someone use a thing and noticing where they hesitate
- Sketching several structurally different approaches before refining one
- Building and testing prototypes before committing to code
- Maintaining a design system so patterns stay consistent
- Writing interface copy that removes confusion
- Defending a decision with reasoning rather than preference

Most people arrive from somewhere adjacent. These are common starting points and what tends to carry over.
Graphic or visual design
Craft, hierarchy and typographic judgement.
Front-end development
Knowing what is cheap and what is expensive to build.
Teaching, psychology or social science
Research method and genuine curiosity about how people think.
Customer support
An unusually clear picture of where the current experience fails.
Suggested development areas
Where the gap usually is
Common areas people need to build when moving toward this path. Useful, not disqualifying.
- 01Accessibility as a default rather than a final check
- 02Research method, so decisions are not just well-argued opinions
- 03Systems thinking across many screens rather than one
- 04Writing — most interface problems are language problems
