Career preparation

Prepare for what's actually being tested.

Most interviews assess a small number of things repeatedly. Preparing five good stories covers far more ground than memorising answers to fifty questions.

Five stories worth having ready

Each one answers several questions. Write them down, then practise saying them aloud — the gap between the two is usually larger than people expect.

  • 01

    Something you built or changed

“Walk me through a project you're proud of.”

    Judgement, ownership, technical depth

  • 02

    Something that went wrong

“Tell me about a time you made a mistake.”

    Honesty, self-correction, what you learned

  • 03

    A disagreement you handled

“Describe a conflict with a colleague.”

    Collaboration, communication, maturity

  • 04

    A constraint you worked within

“When did you have to cut scope or ship something imperfect?”

    Prioritisation, pragmatism, trade-off reasoning

  • 05

    Why this direction

“Why are you moving into this field?”

Motivation, realism, whether you've actually looked into it

Frequently asked

Common questions

Enough that your core stories are clear and you can say them out loud without stumbling. Beyond that, over-rehearsing tends to make answers sound recited and makes follow-up questions harder to handle.
